The “Balanced Single Dish” helps to create (or compose) healthy and tasty meals. It was created by nutrition experts from the Harvard School of Public Health and editors of Harvard Health Publications, and is designed to address the shortcomings of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) food pyramid. The “Balanced Single Plate” provides detailed guidance, in a simple format, to help people make the best food choices. The information that follows is useful for creating a rich, balanced and healthy dish that can be eaten at home or packed.
Half of the plate should consist of fruit and vegetables:
This gives colour and variety of nutrients to the dish, and remember that potatoes do not count as vegetables on the “Balanced Single Plate” because of their negative impact on blood sugar.
A quarter of the plate should be made up of wholegrain cereals: these should not be processed or refined. Suitable for this dish are all whole grains, barley, wheat grains, quinoa, oats, brown rice and foods made from them. The benefit of using this type of food is that it does not raise blood sugar and insulin levels, as white bread, white rice and other refined cereals do.
A quarter of the plate should be made up of protein:
Fish, chicken, beans and nuts are all healthy, versatile and rich in protein. They can be mixed into salads and go well with the vegetables on the plate. It is essential, however, to limit red meat, and to avoid processed meats such as bacon and sausage.
Healthy vegetable oils in moderation:
Choose healthy vegetable oils such as olive, rapeseed, soybean, corn, sunflower, peanut and others, and avoid partially hydrogenated oils, which contain unhealthy unsaturated fats. Remember that low fat content does not mean ‘healthy’.
